Rosey Grier Biography

Rosey Grier

Rosey Grier is a man to whom the written word does not do adequate justice. He is among that breed of rare individuals you must experience to get a true taste of their greatness and the impact they have on others.

Rosey first popped into national prominence as an All-Pro defensive tackle with the New York Giants in 1957. His notoriety as a pro star increased when he was traded to the Los Angeles Rams and became the leader of the "Fearsome Foursome," acclaimed by experts as being the best defensive line in football.

After retiring from professional football in 1968, Rosey became one of the first professional athletes to make the transition to television. He has since starred in at least 10 movies and has been a guest star in over 70 television roles. He appeared as a regular on the ''Daniel Boone Show'', ''Make Room For Granddaddy" and ''The White Shadow.'' He has also toured extensively with Bob Hope and has been a guest performer on several TV specials. He has starred in commercials and telethons as well.

A superb singer, Rosey has performed at Carnegie Hall and other prestigious concert halls throughout the country. In July 1986, his latest album, "Committed'' was released nationally by Word Records. His long awaited autobiography, "Rosey: The Gentle Giant" was published and distributed by Harrison House a month later.

Rosey is indelibly etched in the memory of all America because of his role in subduing Sirhan Sirhan during the Robert Kennedy assassination. His stint with needlepoint has also left people throughout the country still smiling whenever they envision this giant of a man, sitting in a rocking chair, sewing away.

As a concerned citizen and a spokesman for the elderly and inner-city youth of America, Rosey has been the recipient of several national honors and White House invitations from several presidents of the United States. He is a valued friend of the powerful and the less fortunate.

Today, as an ordained minister, his commitment is to change, for the better, the inner cities of our country. In 1984, he established the national headquarters of his non-profit organization, "Are You Committed," in downtown Los Angeles, where he is developing a series of prototypical educational and spiritual programs that will train and benefit young people from the inner cities. He was recently elected to the Foundations of the Milken Families' and CaP CURE's Board of Directors. The Foundations of the Milken Families' focus is on Education, Community and Human development. CaP CURE's focus is to find a cure for prostate cancer.

Standing 6'5" and weighing approximately 300 pounds, Rosey Grier is, literally and figuratively, head and shoulders above the crowd.
