Charles Lauer

Charles S. Lauer is a legend of the healthcare industry. He was the publisher of Modern Healthcare magazine for more than 30 years, taking it from a monthly publication that was hemorrhaging red ink in 1976 to the industry's leading weekly - the "Bible of healthcare business news." He wrote a regular column for the magazine that was widely read by tens of thousands of senior executives of America's healthcare institutions. Over the years he gave hundreds of speeches, contributed articles and op-eds to magazines and daily newspapers and hosted a television show featuring interviews with healthcare leaders.

He is also the author of three books - Soar with the Eagles, Reach for the Stars and Decency - in which he shares his vision of the qualities that define personal and professional success, using stories from everyday life to illustrate his messages.

Lauer now advises healthcare organizations on current trends and future opportunities. He serves on the board of a number of institutions, writes regular columns for Becker's Hospital Review and Healthcare Business Media, and makes regular presentations to audiences across the United States. His speaking topics range from formal speeches on health reform to freewheeling discussions of ethical business behavior and rousing motivational talks to sales forces.

A proud promoter of the profession of selling, Lauer's career includes early success as a retail representative for Life Magazine and drug merchandising manager of Look. He served as Midwest sales manager for two McGraw-Hill trade publications and was general sales manager for the publications of the American Medical Association. Later, he became the AMA's director of communications. He also held various positions with Family Media, Inc. and Petersen Publishing.

Charles Lauer received his BA from Middlebury College in Vermont. He served in the United States Army as a corporal during the Korean War and continued his postgraduate education at the Northwestern University Medill School of Journalism in Evanston, Ill.

Lauer has spoken to hundreds of organizations, including the American College of Healthcare Executives, Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Eastman Kodak, 3-M, IBM, Hewlett-Packard, Baxter International, Hospital Corporation of America, Community Health Systems and Hill-Rom.

He has been presented with numerous awards for his achievements. Leading the list is the 2004 American Institute of Architects' Academy of Architecture for Health's Michael E. DeBakey Award for Achievement in Healthcare (previous winners had included Jonas Salk and C. Everett Koop). He also won the National Healthcare Award from B'nai B'rith International and was named an Honorary Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. Lauer is a member of the Studer Group Hall of Fame, which honored him for his focus on the patient experience of care.
